Being wed for two years and raising a son who already was a year old, Geetaji found little more time this year to participate in singing. She sang around 20 or so movies. Among the notable music directors she sang for included O.P. Nayyar and S.D. Burman.
Here husband Guru Dutt made “Mr. & Mrs. ‘55” during 1955. It had Madhubala and Guru Dutt in the leads and was directed by Guru Dutt himself. Its music once again was composed by O.P. Nayyar. By this time, the Geetaji-OP tandem were in sync as the pair delivered hit after hit. “Mr. & Mrs. ‘55” was no different. This had nine songs and Geetaji sang six of them. She had three solos and three duets with Mohd. Rafi. After nearly 55 years, the songs and the music of this movie remain fresh.
C.H. Atma made famous the song “Preetam Aan Milo”. Geetaji sings a song that starts similarly in “Mr. & Mrs. ‘55”. This song was originally written by Saroj Mohini whom Nayyar later married. Mohiniji was a bit apprehensive when she heard that OP will have her sing this song in this movie. But when she heard Geeetaji sing the song, she knew that Geetaji was not just any other ordinary singer. She was a singer extraordinaire. It is amazing how well Geetaji’ spirited voice amplifies Madhubala’s already spritely personality in the movie. Geetaji leaves her stamp even on Madhubala when she sings with her soul the song “Thandi Hawa Kaali Ghata”. Then Geetaji turns completely opposite when she dances with the actress Cuckoo by lending her voice in the song “Neele Aasmani”. Among the three duets, “Udhar Tum Hassen Ho” is a standout.
Geetaji also had three solos for OP’s film “Miss Coca Cola”. The movie starred Geeta Bali and Shammi Kapoor who were in love with each other and were on the verge of getting married. Someone wrote that if Geetaji were alive today Pepsi people

could not have found anyone with so much fizz promoting their product. The songs “Ban Dhadkan”, “Teri Kaafir Nigah” and “Sach Sach Bol” are still pleasing on ears for the melody and singing styles.
Burmanda had Geetaji sing in three of his movies during 1955. These were “Devdas” (two duets), “Munimji” (two solos, a duet, and a triplet), and “Society” (a solo and a duet). The duets in “Devdas” with Manna Dey are some fine compositions by Burmanda creating 40’s Bengal atmosphere. Even today, Geetaji’s triplet with Hemant Kumar and Thakur, the song “Dil Ki Umangen Hain Jawan” brings chuckles. Geetaji was at her teasing best the way she sang the song.
Anil Biswas, generally considered a Lata person, had Geetaji sing six separate solos in “Faraar”. Some of the beautiful numbers include “Har Ek Nazar”, “Ek Raat” and “Jee Bhar Ke”. In “Do Dulhe” she sang two solos and a duet. For “Shiva Bhkta” she sang a solo for which music was by Chiragupt. Hansraj Behl had her sing two solos in “Darbaar”.
For Hemant Kumar’s “Bahu” Geetaji sang a solo and a duet. In Jagmohan’s “Sardar” she had a solo. Khayyam ji her sing a solo in “Tatar Ka Chor”.
For “Milap” she sang three beautiful solos and a duet. The music was by N. Dutta. It was his maiden venture. The music was a hit. The movie also had a new director, Raj Khosla.
Geetaji sang a solo and a duet in “Amanat”. This Bimal Roy movie had its music composed by Salil Chowdhury. The music for “Ab-E-Hayat” was provided by Sardar Malik. Geetaji had three solos in it.
Geetaji’s singing history for films in 1955 is summarized in the table starting on the next page. Please note that this information is not complete.

1956 was another eventful year in Geetaji’s life. She gave birth to her second son, Arun, on July 10. With her first son growing up, with the arrival of newly born, and her husband Guru Dutt busy with the production of “C.I.D.” and laying groundwork for his groundbreaking “Pyaasa”, she still managed to find time to sing. And sing she did. Over 32 movies. Hundreds of songs. Many huge hits that are evergreen and remembered fondly even today. She was one energetic lady.
During this year she didn’t sing any songs for S.D. Burman. However, O.P. Nayyar was able to tap in her vocal sweetness to a maximum. Even though a new side of Geetaji’s side emerged with “Baazi (1951)” for which Burmanda composed music for, it was OP who was able to develop that side to a maximum. She became a real hip singer under his baton. Geetaji was one of those gifted singers who could sing a soft song as easily as a sultry one. She could sing happy ones as easily as snappy ones. If listeners thought she was best in romantic songs, she was no less with emotional songs. Someone once wrote in praise of Geetaji this way: she has this rare gift that she could effervescently sing for both the doll and the moll. That in a nutshell is Geeta Dutt for you.
Geetaji sang in five different movies for OP during 1956. She sang a beautiful duet with Rafi Saheb in Bhagwan’s laugh-riot “Bhagam Bhag”. Her three songs in “C.I.D.” are still talked about. The duet with Rafiji, “Yeh Hai Bombai Meri Jaan” was a great tribute to the city of Bombay. This song was nominated for best song by Filmfare but did not win. She also had two other beautiful solos in “C.I.D.”. She sang five songs in “Chhoo Mantar”, three solos and two duets. Her duet with Rafi Saheb, “Tumhi Ne Dard Diya” creates a pang in your heart each time you listen to. The solo in the same movie “JabBaadal Lehraaya” is yet anotther beauty. She had three duets in “Johny Walker”. Finally in “Shrimati 420” she sang three solos and a duet. All three solos from this movie were chartbusters. Especially the song “Mere Zindagi Ke Humsafar” is one of her alltime beautiful solos.
For Anil Biswas, Geetaji sang three solos and a duet in “Heer”. Chitragupt recorded a couple of solos of Geetaji for his “Basre Ki Hoor”. For Hansraj Behl, one of her great supporters during her meteoric rise to fame and fortune had Geetaji sing in three different movies. These were “Inquilaab” (a solo), “Khul Ja Sim Sim” (three solos and two duets), and “Malika” (two solos and a duet).
Hemantda, who used her talents magnificently earlier in “Anand Math (1952)” had Geetaji sing in two of his movies in 1956. These were “Arab Ka Saudagar” (two solos) and “Lalten” (a solo and a duet). The two solos from “Arab Ka Saudagar” reflecting very opposite moods showed how versatile singer Geetaji can be and both of them were very popular.
This was the year Madan Mohanji also got into the fray. He had Geetaji sing in four different movies. These were “Bhai Bhai” (a solo), “Ek Shola” (a solo and a duet), “Fifty-Fifty” (a solo), and “Pocketmaar” (a solo). Her song from “Bhai Bhai”, “Aye Dil Mujhe Bataa De” is still talked about for its evergreen natural freshness. Geetaji had put so much tender love and sweetness into the song that its melody lingers forever.
Geetaji sang six songs in three different movies for S.N. Tripathi during 1956. These were “Rajrani Meera” (a solo), “Roop Kumari” (a solo and a duet), and “Sati Naag Kanya” (two solos and a duet). The duet in “Roop Kumari” with Manna Dey has a classical base and the singing of each is beautifully complementary. In “Basant Bahaar”, Shankar & Jaikishan had her sing such a classical-based song, again with Manna Dey.
In “Rangeen Raatein” Roshan had her sing a duet and a triplet. She sang in couple of movies for Vinod. These were “Makheechoos” (a solo and a duet with Talat Mahmood) and “Sheikh Chilli” (a duet with G.M. Durrani). Talat, who is famous for his velvet touch romantic songs, goes the other way in this duet by trying to match with Geetaji’s touch of naughtiness embedded in this song.
In “Toofan Aur Diya”, she sang three songs for Vasant Desai (two solos and a duet). One of the outstanding song from this was the solo Geetaji sang “Meri Aan Bhagwan”. This song was sung unlike her other songs in high pitch voice to the rich lyrics penned by Bharat Vyas that stirs deep emotions and leaves a lump in your throat. Such a song comes only in ages. And it is never aged because it stays for ever young.
She also sang in several other movies in 1956. One of the notable of these was “Sailaab”. Geetaji financed this movie almost in its entirety. It was produced by her brother Mukul Roy who was also its music director. When the director of the movie left after the movie was completed only half, Guru Dutt reluctantly took over and finished it. There are at least two solos she sang in this movie. It may have more of her songs but this information is not easily available.
Geetaji also sang in 1956 in movies for music directors B.N. Baali in “Baaghi Sardar” (a solo), for Bipin & Babul in “Baadal Aur Bijli” (a solo), for Bulo C. Rani in “Badshah Salamat” (a duet), for Iqbal Qureshi in “Sipahsalar” (a solo), for Jimmy in “Awara Shahzadi” (a solo), for Ravi in “Ayodhyapati” (a solo), and a couple of solos in”Fighting Queen”.
Geetaji’s singing history for films in 1956 is summarized in the table starting on the next page. Please note that this information is not complete.

Geetajii was one of those gifted singers who, like someone observed, did not sing but used to glide through the tune. Not many people have such command on how to sing. Geetaji did. She was vivacity personified. If one closed their eyes and listened to her songs, they can imagine the face behind that voice shining with full of life and hope in her eyes.
Happily married until now, Geetaji had her marriage suddenly on the rocks. She found her husband drifting slowly away from her succumbed obviously to the charms of his discovery, beautiful and talented Waheeda Rehman. To make amends, Guru Dutt launched a movie called “Gauri” with Geetaji in the lead. It was supposed to be the first cinemascope movie in India. But the progress for the movie was painstakingly slow because of Geetaji’s refusal to cooperate with the shooting. A thorough professional she was until now, suddenly she found herself not wanted by the same music directors who loved her. Also, there was pressure from Guru Dutt for her not to accept any outside assignments except for his movies.
Amidst these tumultuous times, Geetaji still found time to sing in 35 or so odd movies in 1957 honoring all of her singing commitments that were made before her bad times. Old or new, she sang with the same zeal and enthusiasm for every music director. The dulcet voice that defined convention defined her singing even in these troubled times in her life.
Geetaji sang for Anil Biswas in two movies during 1957. These were “Abhimaan” (two solos) and “Jasoos” (also two solos). Anil Biswas a Lata Mangeshkar person. Therefore, not surprisingly, these were her last two movies she sang for Anilda.
Geetaji also sang for Avinash Vyas in two movies in 1957. For “Aadhi Roti” she recorded a solo. For “Naagmani” she sang two solos. Chitragupt, for whom during these years Geetaji was his favorite, had her sing in three movies. She had five solos in “Captain Kishore”, a solo in “Laxmi Pooja” and another solo in “Pawantputra Hanuman”.
For “Ab Dilli Door Nahin”, a film by Raj Kapoor and music composed by Dattaram, she sang three songs. Two of these were duets and the third one was a triplet. She had a solo in “Pak Daaman” the music of which was composed by Ghulam Mohammed.
N. Dutta recorded a duet of Geetaji for “Mr. X” and a solo for “Shyam Ki Jogan”. She sang in two movies for Madan Mohan in 1957. For “Gateway Of India” she sang a beautiful song, “Yeh Raah Badi Mushkil Hai”. For “Samundar” Madan Mohan recorded two duets of Geetaji and Rafi Saheb.
She sang in three movies for O.P. Nayyar. These were “Bade Sarkar” (a duet), “Mai Baap” (two duets), and “Ustad” (a solo and a duet). Most of these songs were massive hits. But one song more than anything else was a standout. This was the solo from “Ustad”. The song was “Chor Lutere Daaku”. This one is a masterpiece for generations to remember. The beauty of this song is that Geetaji sings it so that it sounds very sensuous without being salacious. She had this knack of never making songs like these sound voluptuous but only pleasurably virtuous.
During this time period one of the popular music directors was Hemant Kumar. Geetaji sang not in one or two but seven movies of Hemantda during 1957. Hemantda was very bust that year. So was Geetaji. These movies were “Bandi” (a solo and two duets), “Ek Jhalak” (three solos and two duets), “Fashion” (a solo and a duet), “Hill Station” (two solos and a duet), “Kitna Badal Gaya Insaan” (two solos), “Miss Mary” (a solo), and “Yahudi Ki Beti” (four solos and two duets). Amazing thing about this is that almost all songs in all of these movies were hits. A great achievement by Hemantda. And, Geetaji played a large role in that success. Most of these songs were pleasurable listening experiences. With singing in so many different movies, Geetaji had to sing these songs covering different ends of the spectrum. These songs were challenging and explored a gamut of emotions from subtle to sultry, sprightly to sadness, mellifluous to melancholic, naughty to nice, devotional to emotional, and serene to sincere. For each of these moods, Geetaji rose to meet every challenge.
Geetaji was back singing for Burmanda in two movies in 1957. These were “Nau Do Gyarah” (two solos and a duet) and “Pyaasa” (three solos and a duet). Guru Dutt’s “Pyaasa” was a landmark in Indian movie history. It was voted as one of the top 100 movies in the world by the Time magazine. A movie is thrust into greatness when everything that made it work together as a well-oiled machine. “Pyaasa” was such a rare movie. One of its major strengths was very poignant lyrics penned by Sahir Ludhianvi and tuned to perfection by S.D. Burman. Geetaji here gets to sing some beautiful songs for her husband’s picture. The song “Aaj Sajan Mohe Ang Lagaa Le” is the one to remember for ages. This song is one of the best performances of Geetaji. From such song that pleads for her lover’s embrace, Geetaji sings a teasing duet with Mohd. Rafi, “Hum Aap Ke Aankhon Mein”. Just contrasting these two songs makes one evident of the singing skills Geetaji possessed.
Geetaji sang a number of songs in three movies for Roshanji in 1957. These were “Agra Road” (one solo and five duets), “Coffee House” (three solos), and “Do Roti” (a solo). “Ye Hawa Ye Fiza” is a standout from “Coffee House”.
Tripathiji was there again in 1957. He had Geetaji sing in two movies, “Janam Janam Ki Phere” (a duet) and “Ram Hanuman Yudh” (a duet). She also sang fro Salil Chowdhury in two movies; “Apradhi Kaun?” (a duet) and “Zamana” (a solo). The other music directors she sang for were Ravi in “Ek Saal” (a duet), Sailesh in “Savera” (two solos), and Sanmukh Babu in “Naag Padmini (a duet).
Geetaji’s singing history for films in 1957 is summarized in the table starting on the next page. Please note that this information is not complete.

While Geetaji was continuing to have marital problems she still maintained her singing tempo. She sang for nearly 40 movies in 1958. Most of these songs were on the mark and on the hit parade for a long time. If anything these songs prove, it is that Geetaji’s vocal mystique that was so unique has been in the public eye so long even today they enjoy immense popularity.
During this year Lataji and Burmanda had a fallout with each other. He wanted Geetaji to pick up the slack but with all the personal problems Geetaji was having she became very unreliable. She would be late for recording sessions. She would not rehearse properly. It was widely believed at this juncture that Geetaji took up drinking to find comfort and solace and even if temporarily, to escape from all of her problems. Burmanda was a man of little tolerance and lived by certain principles all his life. With this type of attitude Geetaji was displaying he chose to go with Asha Bhosle. After this Geetaji did sing a song here and a song there for Burmanda, but it was never like before. She sang only two songs for him during 1958. “Lajwanti” had all female songs done by Ashaji except for one. That song was a solo by Geetaji. “Aaja Chhaya Kaare Badre” was a beauty and still evokes sweet memories with its lilting music and soulful rendering. She also sang a solo for SD in “Sitaron Se Aage”.
Another great supporter of her, O.P. Nayyar, also started drifting away from her. His reasons were different. Even though he had full confidence in Geetaji’s singing abilities, it was his emotional involvement with Asha Bhosle that made him decide to phase out all assignments given to Geetaji. But in1958 she was still his choice of the singers. She sang in five different movies for him. These were “Farishta” (a solo), “Mr. Qartoon M.A.” (a duet), “Mujrim” (two solos and a duet), “Raagini” (a duet), and “12 O’Clock” (three solos and two duets). As usually was the case with OP’s songs, most of these were chartbusters. One of the solos from “12 O’Clock”, “Kaisa Jaadu Balam Tu Ne Daara” casts a spell on the listener even today after 50 years. The wistful longing she embeds into this song makes it at once so endearing. The last song of Geetaji OP recorded was the solo from “Howrah Bridge”. This was “Mera Naam Chin Chin Chu”. This song makes one dance even today. The sex appeal in her voice of this scintillating song, the subtle enticement she puts into it, and the ease with which she glides through it make one feel younger. This was her 18th solo for OP. In contrast Ashaji sang 81 solos for him.
Chitragupt was a busy man during 1958. He had nine movies released that year. Geetaji was his favorite singer at this time. She sang a total of 19 songs in these nine movies. The movies were “Baazigar” (a solo), “Chaalbaaz” (a solo and two duets), “Daughter Of Sindbad” (two solos and a duet), “Raj Sinhasan” (a duet), “Sindbad Ki Beti” (a solo and a duet), “Son Of Sindbad” (a solo and three duets), “Taxi Stand” (a solo and a duet), “Teesri Gali” (two solos), and “Zimbo” (a solo). Most of these were B grade and many of these songs went into obscurity for that reason. It is not easy to find these songs today.
Geetaji sang three beautiful duets with Hemantda in “Police”. Its music was also composed by Hemant Kumar himself. These duets are so evergreen that even today they reverberate freshly in your heart. In particular, the duet “Oh Oh Oh Baby” had so much oomph that one would like to hear it again and again. “Chale Hum Kahan” is a beautiful romantic duet. “Chup Ja Hamare Dil Mein” is the other sweet romantic duet from this movie.
Geetaji sang in four movies for Madan Mohan. These were “Adalat” (a duet), “Chandan” (a solo), “Khazanchi” (a solo) and “Night Club” (a solo). The solo “Aankh Milane Ke Liye” from “Chandan” is a beauty. It is a romantically sweet song and the way Geetaji endearingly sings it, it becomes an instant winner.
In “Detective” she sang a solo and three duets. Its music was provided by her brother, Mukul Roy. For N. Dutta she sang in two movies. These were “Light House” (a duet) and “Sadhna” (a solo and a duet). The solo from “Sadhna”, “Tora Man Kyon Ghabraye” was a bhajan. In Geetaji’s voice this song becomes sublime. Her strength lies in bringing out the emotion so admirably that sets her voice apart from the rest of the singers.
For Ravi she sang in two movies; “Dilli Ka Thug” (a solo) and “Dulhan” (a duet). The solo was a cabaret song “O Babu O Laala”. It is similar in the vein of “Mera Naam Chin Chin Chu”. Geetaji was equally adept in singing these type of songs. For few years, if a club scene demanded such a song sequence, composers could only think of Geetaji. She had that mesmerizing effect.
Hansraj Behl had Geetaji sing a solo and a duet in “Milan”. In “Panchayat” she sang two duets for Iqbal Qureshi. A.R. Qureshi had her sing a solo in “Sim Sim Marjina”. For Dhaniram’s “Taqdeer” she had a solo. For Ram Ganguly’s “10 O’Clock” she sang a duet. In “Taxi 555”, Sardar Malik recorded a duet of Geetaji with Rafi Saheb. For Shankar & Jaikishan’s “Yahudi” she sang a beautiful duet with Lataji. In “Naya Kadam”, for which music was composed by Shivram Narayan, she sang a solo. She sang a duet for S.S. Mohinder’s “Naya Paisa”. For Vasant Desai’s “Goonj Uthi Shehnai” she had a beautiful duet with Lataji. This song “Ankhiya Bhool Gayi Hai Sona” is a beauty with a tinge of tease in Geetaji’s tone. She was so good at this. For S.N. Tripathi’s “Pareeksha”, Geetaji sang three solos and a duet.
Geetaji’s singing history for films in 1958 is summarized in the table starting on the next page. Please note that this information is not complete.

In spite of many personal problems she was having, Geetaji, a phenomenon she was, still found time to keep her singing career intact. Singing was her love. She wasn’t going to give it up without a fight. 1959 saw her sing in 35 or so movies. A remarkable number even for persons whose life is going very smooth. Geetaji had a resolve of steel.
S.D. Burman, one of her mentors in her growth as a singer, had her sing in three of his movies in 1959. These were “Insaan Jaag Utha” (a duet), “Kaagaz Ke Phool” (two solos), and “Sujata” (a solo and a duet). Interestingly all these songs are popular even today after nearly half-a-century later. The female duet in “Insaan Jaag Utha”, “Jaanu Jaanu Re” is a tune full of sweet melody sung zestfully by Geetaji and Ashaji. Its playfulness is a perennial delight to the listeners. In her husband’s “Kaagaz Ke Phool” Geetaji sang the song of her life. “Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Haseen Sitam” is a magnificent ode to the tyranny of time that mercilessly separates two people who were in deeply love with each other only a short time back. The rich lyrics were penned by Kaifi Azmi. The pathos and melancholy ridden magic of this song are unmatched. Ironically, the song represented the state Geetaji and Guru Dutt were in their lives at that juncture in time. The song “Bachpan Ke Din” in”Sujata” is another playful female duet, again sung by Geetaji and Ashaji. The song is so much fun and frolic that it bring backs childhood memories to its listener. For the same movie Geetaji sings the lullaby “Hawa Dheere Aana”. One easily lulled by its sweet and soothing voice that wants you to go to sleep.
B grade or not, Chitragupt ji kept on making music. The year 1959 was no different for him. He composed music for as many as seven movies. As usual, Geetaji was one of his favorite and staple singers. She sang altogether 17 songs in these seven movies. These were “Baazigar” (two solos, a duet, and a triplet), “Commander” (four solos), “Daaka” (a duet), “Guest House” (a solo), “Jagga Daku” (a solo and a duet), “Kal Hamara Hai” (a solo), and “Kangan” (two solos and two duets) .
Hemant Kumar, who was busy like a bee in 1958, was relatively quiet in 1959 with just one movie assignment. Geetaji sang a duet for him in “Hum Bhi Insaan Hain” .
.
It was a debut year for the music director Kalyanji (later teamed up with his brother and the team became known as Kalyanji & Anandji). In three of their movies Geetaji sang. These were “Bedard Zamana Kya Jaane” (a duet), “Ghar Ghar Ki Baat” (a duet), and “Oh Tera Kya Kehna” (a solo). The duet with Rafi Saheb in “Bedard Zamana Kya Jaane”, “Yeh Gora Gora Mukhda” is a Nayyarish type foot tapping melodious number.
Geetaji sang for Madan Mohan in two movies in 1959. These were “Baap Bete” (a duet) and “Jagir” (a solo). Manohar gave her two duets to sing in “Doctor Z” .
In 1959, Geetaji sang in four movies for N. Dutta. These were “Bhai Bahen” (two duets), “Jaalsaaz” (a duet), “Mr. Johm” (a duet), and “Naach Ghar” (a duet). The duet in “Jaalsaaz” with Kishore Kumar, “Jab Jab Tujh Ko Chhua” proved controversial and was removed from the movie.
For Ravi she sang in two movies in 1959; “Jawani Ki Hawa” (two duets) and “Nai Rahen” (a duet). For Shankar & Jaikishan Geetaji sang in two movies during that year. These were “Love Marriage” (a solo and a duet) and “Shararat” (two duets). The solo “Kareeb Aao” is a scintillating number for which Geetaji’s stamp is all over there. For these type of songs, Geetaji’s voice was at her seductive best. Her duet, “Dil Se Dil Takraaye”, with Rafi Saheb in “Love Marriage” was another racy song.
Tripathi, for whom Geetaji sang in most of his early movies, had her sing again in two movies in 1959. These were “Jagga Daku” (three solos and a duet) and “Kavi Kalidas” (two solos and two triplets). The solo from “Kavi Kalidas”, “Door Desh Se Koi Sapera” is classical-based song that was sung by Geetaji with much élan.
Vasant Desai composed music for two movies in 1959. Geetaji sang in both of them. All four of them were duets with Rafi Saheb. The movies were “Ardhangini” (three duets) and “School Master” (one duet). These were all fun-filled songs. In the song “Dil Hum To Haare” from “Ardhangini”, Geetaji and Rafi Saheb do some yodeling also. What a delight.
Geetaji also sang for several other music directors during 1959. These include Bipin Dutt for “Kya Yeh Bombai Hai” (a solo), Naushad in “Son Of India” (a solo), Ramesh Naidu in “Jai Singh” (a solo), S.D. Batish in “Ek Armaan Mera” (a solo), and Sardar Malik in “Maa Ke Ansoo” (two solos) .
Geetaji’s singing history for films in 1959 is summarized in the table starting on the next page. Please note that this information is not complete.
