Roshan
Lal Nagrath (1917 – 1967), better known simply by his
first name Roshan, is a legendary Hindi film music composer.
During his career spanning 20 odd years, most notable
quality of his music was the melody. He had his own
style of music and never compromised with the quality
of his music. Nor did he ever play to the gallery. He
is especially remembered for the music which he rendered
for qawwalis.
Producer director Kidar Sharma gave Roshan his first
break with the music for the film Neki aur Badi (1949).
In spite of the commercial failure of this film, Sharma
entrusted Roshan with another assignment for his next
film Baware Nain (1950) starring Geeta Bali and Raj
Kapoor. This was a musical and commercial hit and truly
launched Roshan as a leading composer. All the songs
for the heroine were sung by singer Rajkumari Dubey,
yet the most popular song of the film, Roshan’s first
hit, was a duet sung by Mukesh and Geeta Dutt “Khayalon
mein kisi ke isi tarhe aaya nahin karate” filmed on
Raj Kapoor and the second heroine Vijayalaxmi. Till
today, this is one of the most popular duets of Geeta
Dutt and finds place on most of the CD compilations.
