Zohrabai Ambalewali or Zohrajaan Ambalewali, a very talented and popular singer of yesteryears, is best remembered now by the songs like 'Ankhiyan milage jiyaa bharmaake' and 'Aai Diwali, aai Diwali' sung under the baton of Naushad for the superhit musical film Rattan (1944). Zohrabai Ambalewali was one of the leading playback singers with Shamshad Beghum and Rajkumari till the year 1946-1947. With the arrival of younger and fresher voices like Geeta Roy and Lata Mangeshkar, Zohrabai couldn't hold her position due to their competition. She did not get to sing many songs post the years 1953-1954.
The first song that Geeta Dutt sang with her (which also happens to be Asha Bhonsle's first recorded Hindi film song) was by music director Hansraj Behl for the film Chunariya in 1948 (Saawan aaya, saawan aayaa, re). The audio of this rare song is not available.
The next year they sang 'Hasrat bhari nazar ko teraa intezaar hai ..O pardesiyaa’ for composer Ghulam Mohammad (Dil ki basti, 1949). Geeta Dutt starts off the song and then Zohrabai Ambalewali takes over, also supported by a backing chorus. This is a fast-paced rhythmic song showcasing both their voices. Geeta sang six songs for composer Ghulam Mohammad for this film.
In 1950, Shyambabu Pathak directed the music for the film 'Preet kaa geet' which showcased the stellar voices of senior singers Zohrabai Ambalewali, Mukesh and Amirbai along with relative new-comer Geeta Roy. Geeta and Mukesh shared two songs with Zohrabai for this film. The song 'Ek taraf jal raha deepak' and Jiski vaani mein bijlee”. The song 'Ek taraf jal raha deepak' is a sad song, with equal footage given to all three voices.
In the year 1952, for the film Usha Kiran, Pandit Hanuman Prasad gave a quartet to Geeta Dutt, Zohrabai Ambalewali, G.M. Durrani and Asha Bhonsle, a song called 'Jaago jaago bhor suhaani aayi. Just like many other songs of Geeta, the audio of this rare song is also not available.
In essence, by the time Geeta became a popular singer, Zohrabai’s career was on decline and they did not get much opportunities to sing together.
