1951 was a very eventful year in Geetaji’s life. When S.D. Burman had her sing songs of “Baazi”, sort of a complete metamorphism happened. After catapulting to fame and fortune with Burmanda’s 1947 chartbuster “Mera Sundar Sapna Beet Gaya” in “Do Bhai” Geetaji was committed to singing more or less sad songs. At least in the ensuing years, from 1948 to 1950, where she reigned supreme in playback singing, majority of the songs Geetaji sang can be typed as “weepers”. Her talent was still very latent and was waiting to be discovered to be experimented in hitherto unchartered territories of singing styles. This happened with Burmanda’s “Baazi”. In a sudden change of face, Burmanda had Geetaji sing several fast paced and racy songs for that movie. It was as if he was making a “bet” (“Baazi”) that only he knew that he was not going to loose. No one until this time knew that Geetaji possessed the talent for singing these types of waltz-based songs. A new Geetaji was born with this movie.

With the thundering success of the songs and its music, the movie “Baazi” changed Geetaji’s life forever, in more ways than one. Firstly, the other music directors suddenly discovered her new talent for different styles of singing and were eager to sign her for many such songs. Secondly, but most importantly, she met her future husband, Guru Dutt, while singing for “Baazi”. Ambitious and extremely talented, ground in many facets of movie making through several years of apprenticeship under some well-known movie personalities, Guru Dutt was waiting for an opportunity to happen so that he can direct a movie. It came with “Baazi”, a movie his close friend Dev Anand was producing. This maiden directorial debut venture by Guru Dutt was going to lead his life to some legendary heights in the future.

Guru Dutt was 26 years old when he fell in love with Geeta Roy during filming of “Baazi”. Geeta Roy met him for the first time when Guru Dutt was filming the song “Tadbeer Se Bigdi Hui” on actress Geeta Bali. This was the very first scene filmed for “Baazi” on the movie’s muhurat day. Geeta Roy also met at the same time other members of Guru Dutt’s family, who were all present for this important day in Guru Dutt’s life.

This professional association between Geeta Roy and Guru Dutt soon tuned into love affair. The success of the film “Baazi” made it possbile for them to be quickly engaged. Even though Geetaji and Guru Dutt were very much in love and got engaged and were anxious to marry right away, Geetaji’s family was reluctant to lose the breadwinner of the household. Because of this unexpected resistance, their wedding did not take place for another two years.

Year 1951 was a very busy year for Geetaji. For S.D. Burman alone she sang in as many as four movies that year. These were “Baazi” (seven solos), “Bahaar” (two solos), “Ek Nazar” (two solos), and “Naujawan” (two duets). The music of “Baazi” and singing of Geetaji for that movie were some of the reasons for its great commercial success. Especially Geetaji’s song “Tadbir Se Bigdi Hui Taqdeer bana Le” created a tremendous stir when the movie was released. The audience would flock to theaters to see actress Geeta Bali perform to Geetaji’s song which was one of Burmanda’s finest compositions. It is interesting to note that this was a ghazal written by the lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi. It was set to music in western style by Burmanda. Guru Dutt who went on to be recognized as one of the best in picturizing songs had a perfect setting in the movie for this song with the right amount of lights and shades. In a story Burmanda recalls that, he was a bit nervous when “Baazi” was about to be released. To escape the anxiety, an avid angler he was, he went with a friend for fishing and saw some kids playing near the river and having fun between them singing songs. To Burmanda’s surprise they were singing “Tadbir Se”. Reassured, he retuned form the holidays to find that his music, the songs, and the movie were big hits.

Hansraj Behl had her sing in three of his movies. These were “Kashmir” (a triplet), “Nakhare” (one solo and one triplet), and “Rajput” (a duet). Bulo C. Rani had her sing in two movies. These were “Nirmal” (a solo) and “Pyar Ki Baatein” (a duet). Geetaji also sang in a movie for which C. Ramchandra and Madan Mohan together provided music. This was “Shabistan”. She had two duets and a triplet in that movie. She also sang for Roshan in “Bedardi” (three solos), Chitragupt in “Hamari Shaan” (two duets), and for S.N. Tripathi in two movies. These were “Hanuman Pataal Vijay” (a solo) and “Laxmi Narayan” (five solos and a duet). The other music directors she sang in 1951 include Husnlal & Bhagatram in “Stage” (a solo), Khayyam (a duet in “Pyaar Ki Baatein”), Khemchand Prakash (4 solos and a duet in “Shri Ganesh Janma”), Madan Mohan (a solo in “Ada”), a duet for N. Tiwari in “Maya Machhindra” and Vinod (a duet in “Wafa”).

Geetaji’s singing history for films in 1951 is summarized in the table starting on the next page. Please note that this information is not complete.

Geeta Roy found herself extremely busy in 1952. She had assignment after assignment that kept her singing career in a high gear. She delivered hit after hit that year. Amidst all this, she found time to continue her romantic relationship with Guru Dutt. She even sang three songs for a movie he directed, “Jaal”. This was his second attempt at directing. But the resistance from her parents who opposed her marriage to Guru Dutt persisted. They had a Bengali gentleman in their mind for Geetaji.

During 1952, Geetaji sang hundreds of songs in at least 31 different movies. She sang for new as well as established music directors giving almost everyone a hit or two. This pattern she continued through late fifties.

Clearly early fifties were her best years as a playback singer supreme. During these years, she still maintained the status as an influential vocalist of Hindi film world because she kept singing song after song delighting millions of moviegoers throughout India.

Here is a brief recount of Geetaji’s 1952 singing activity.

She sang two solos in “Shiv Shakti” for Avinash Vyas. Basant Prakash had Geetaji sing in two of his movie; “Badnam” (a solo) and “Nishan Danka” (a duet). Bhol Shreshtha recorded a solo of Geetaji for “Nazariya”.

Bulo C. Rani, who had Geetaji sing 12 songs in two movies in earlier years, had her sing for “Baghdad” (two solos and a duet). She sang in three movies for which C. Ramchandra composed music; “Ghungroo” (a duet), “Rangeeli” (a solo), and “Saqi” (a duet).

Chitragupt, the music directed for whom Geetaji sang most songs in her career, had her sing in two of his movies; “Tarang” (two solos, a duet, and a triplet) and “Bhakta Puran” (a solo).

She sang a solo and a duet in the movie “Patal Bhairavi”. This was a Hnidi dubbed version of the phenomenally successful Telugu film of the same name. Its music was provided by Ghantasala, a famous name in Telugu movies who was a singer as well as a music composer.

Hansraj Behl, one of the regulars of Geetaji music directors, had her sing in two movies; “Lal Pari” (two solos and a duet) and “Lanka Dahan” (three solos and a duet).

In “Anand Math” Geetaji sang two sols and two duets under the music direction of Hemant Kumar. She had a duet in Husnlal & Bhagatram’s “Kafila”. For Jimmy’s “Shrimatiji” she recorded a solo. In Mr. Sampat she sang a solo and two duets for the composer named Kala. Incidentally, these two were female duets. The other singer was Jikki, another famous Telugu singer from South.

Khurshid Anwar had Geetaji sing two solos and four duets for “Neelam Pari”. She also recorded a couple of solos for Madan Mohan in “Anjaam”.

O.P. Nayyar composed four solos of Geetaji for the movie “Asmaan”. This was the first movie of O.P. These songs were a rage when the movie was released, especially songs like “Aye Dil Aye Diwane” and “Cham Cham Ghunghar Baaje”. Even though this movie was a commercial failure, some of Geetaji’s songs live on basked on all the glory they richly deserve. Her vibrant vocals can be heard all over in songs such as “Pom Pom Pom Baaja Dole” in even today. “Are Kaun Hoon” is another melodious song from this movie. “Dekho Jaadoo Bhare More Naina” is a stunningly sweet song. “Dil Hai Diwana” is another beauty that its tilting music accompanied by the ethereal voice stays with you forever.

The association of Geetaji and OP yielded some very good results and in future OP becomes a beneficiary of Geetaji’s favors that salvage his professional career.

For the movie “Zalzala”, Geetaji sang five songs; four solos and a duet. The music was by Pankaj Mullik. Robin Chatterjee composed a solo and two duets of Geetaji for “Ratnadeep”.

Burmanda was there in 1952 for Geeta Roy again. For his “Jaal”, the movie directed by her would be future husband Guru Dutt, she sang two solos and a duet. The duet “De Bhi Chuke Hum Dil Nazrana” was with Kishore Kumar. This pair didn’t sing that many songs together. One can not help but think that if only they did. For another Burmanda movie, “Lal Kunwar”, she had a female duet.

For “Sangdil”, Sajjad Hussain recorded a solo and a duet of Geetaji. For the new hot musical duo, Shankar & Jaikishan, she sang a duet and a song of foursome.

There were other movie like “Maa”, “Insaan”, “Rajrani Damyanti”, and “Tamasha” for which Geetaji lent her voice.

Geetaji’s singing history for films in 1952 is summarized in the table starting on the next page. Please note that this information is not complete.

1953 was an important year in Geeta Roy’s life. Guru Dutt’s third directorial ventue “Baaz” was released. It was produced by Geeta Bali’s sister and her husband and starred Geeta Bali and Guru Dutt. It was also partly financed by Guru Dutt himself. The movie proved to be a disaster at the box office. The only redeeming feature of the film was its music. This was only the second movie for O.P. Nayyar, the music director. Geetaji sang six of the eight songs for this movie. Almost all songs became super hits. Amidst these financial losses incurred a debt ridden Guru Dutt pressed Geetaji to marry him. Finally she convinced her parents and Geeta Roy and Guru Dutt tied knots on May 26, 1953.

Because of the wedding and the new responsibilities of a new household Geetaji found herself with not much time to sing in as many songs as before. She did honor all of her commitments and still managed to sing in nearly 20 odd movies.

Geetaji was supposed to sing most of the songs for Filmistan’s musical “Anarkali” but ended up singing only one song. Its music directors were replaced many times before the producers settled on with C. Ramchandra. He opted to go with Lata Mangeshkar, his favorite singer at that time. However for his other movie “Shagufa” she sang a solo and a duet.

Even for Chitragupt, the music director for whom she sang most songs for, she managed to record one solo for “Band Master” and another solo for “Manchala”. In Dhaniram’s “Shole” she recorded two solos and a duet. For Hafeez Khan’s “Lakeeren” she sang a solo and a duet.

After the failure of “Asmaan” in 1952, OP had Asha Bhosle sing all 12 songs of the movie “Chham Chhama Chham”. But Geeta characteristically never held a grudge against OP. But Guru Dutt signed OP to compose music for his new production “Baaz”. It may be because Geetaji’s love interest was Guru Dutt or for any other reason because OP deep in his heart knew what Geetjai was capable of, OP had her sing six solos for the movie “Baaz”. This movie was special to her because it was being directed by Guru Dutt whom she will marry soon. This was for the very first time OP was working for Guru Dutt. He had Geetjai sings different types of songs. On the one hand she sings a song like “Zara Saamne Aa” for the heroine Geeta Bali. Ion the other hand, for the same actress, she sings “Aye Dil Aye Diwne”. Two opposite styles of tunes done to perfection by the singing of Geetaji. Vocals of Geetaji for her other songs also gives rise to enduring admiration for the way she renders these so skillfully. Inspite of melodious music by OP and sweeet songs of Geetaji, “Baa” was a commerial failure.

For “Ladki” she sang two solos and a duet. The music for this movie was provided by the duo of R. Sudarshanam & Dhniram. Vyjayanti Mala was introduced to Hindi audiences in this movie. She sang a solo for Roshan in “Firdaus”.

S.D. Burman, who was Geetaji’s guru in many respects, had her sing in three of his movies. These were “Armaan” (two solos), “Jeevan Jyoti” (a solo and a duet), and “Shahensha” (a solo).

Ustad Ali Akbar Khan provided music for only a few movies. “Humsafar” was one of those movies. Geetaji sang three solos for that movie.

Tripathiji, one of the music directors who used Geetaji’s voice reguarly in his early movies, had her sing two solos and two duets in “Naag Devta”.

Geetaji’s singing history for films in 1953 is summarized in the table starting on the next page. Please note that this information is not complete.

In 1954, Geetaji sang even fewer songs than the year before. Her double duties as a wife and as a singer were demanding. Amidst all of this she found herself expecting her first child. Tarun, her first son was born on July 9, 1954. By curious coincidence, Tarun was born on the same days as his father, Guru Dutt. This probably was one of the reasons why Guru Dutt loved him so much. He was his favorite amongst their three children.

First as a new bride, then as a new mother, Geetaji still managed to sing in some 15 or so movies. She was now singing under the name Geeta Dutt. But her song output was way down. Yet some of the chartbusters came from that year proved to be perennially popular ones. Guru Dutt founded his own independent production company and acted, produced and directed in his first movie “Aar Paar” during that year. When it was released, the movie became a huge hit.

The music for “Aar Paar” was provided by O.P. Nayyar. Guru Dutt owed some money to Nayyar from his earlier failed venture “Baaz”. With no new assignments OP packed and was ready to leave Bombay to go back to his hometown. At this time Geetaji recommended to Guru Dutt to hire OP’s services for his new production “Aar Paar”. Guru Dutt agreed and found this way he will be able to clear the debt he owed to OP if the movie was a success. For both Guru Dutt and OP “Aar Paar” was either a make or a break film. But when the movie was released it was a smashing hit along with its music and evergreen songs. There were eight songs in the movie and Geetaji sang seven of them. Four of these were solos and three were duets with the inimitable Mohd. Rafi. These songs are still popular even today. One of Geetaji’s tantalizing song from this movie, “Babuji Dheere Chalna”, was in a recent (2007) Hindi movie, sung by a different singer, but to the same tune and lyrics. The other solos that are still fresh, young, and vibrant in music lover hearts are the solos like “Hoon Abhi Main Jawan”, “Ja Ja Ja Ja Bewafa”, and “Ye Lo Main Haari Piya”. Especially the song “Ja Ja Ja Ja Bewafa” is such a sweet melody with a tinge of melancholy that epitomizes the very essence of Geetaji’s voice and her singing.

She also sang a duet for OP’s another movie “Mr. Lambu”.

For Chitragupt she sang in two movies. These were “Miss Mala” (three duets with Kishore Kumar) . For “Golkonda Ka Qaidi” (a solo) under the music direction of Datta Davjekar. Hansraj Behl had her sing two solos and a duet in “Lal Pari”.

For Hemant Kumar she sang two solos in “Shart”. One of the songs “Na Yeh Chaand Hoga” still brings goose bumps every time you hear it. It seems like Geetaji was born to sing songs like these. An absolute masterpiece of melodious voice.

She sang songs for Ram Ganguly, a duet in “Sangam”, a solo for S.D. Batish in “Toofan”, for Salil Chowdhury a solo in “Naukri”, for the music duo Timir Baran & S.K. Pal two solos in “Baadbaan” and a duet for Datta Davejkar in “Dharohar”.

Geetaji’s singing history for films in 1954 is summarized in the table starting on the next page. Please note that this information is not complete.
