Shaukat Dehelavi Naashad

Naashad is either completely unknown to music fans or is confused with the more famous MD with a similar name, i.e. Naushad Ali. The fact is that he has quite a few gems to his credit. He deserves to be remembered for them. He may not have been very prolific; but he composed wonderful songs. As per some un-confirmed information he married the singer Premlata, who has sung 'Chup chup khade ho' with Lata Mangeshkar for the film Badi Behen. Some of the films for which he gave music are Naghma, Baradari, Zindagi ya Toofan, Payal, Toote Tare and Pyar Ki Dastan. He left India for Pakistan in early 1960s along with lyricist Nakhshab Jarchavi (who penned the lyrics of the evergreen song "Aayega aanewala" sung by Lata Mangeshkar for the film Mahal) and composed music for some 50 odd films in Pakistan.

Geeta Dutt was one of the topmost singers in late forties and has sung as many as six solo songs for him for the film Jeene Do (1948). None of them are easily available on any of the CD/Cassette compilations. She also sang two lovely duets with Mukesh the same year for the film Toote Taare (1948). “Raja mohe le chal tu dilli ki sair ko” and “Rehate ho ab toh har ghadi meri nazar ke samne” have that

special vintage flavor. Both Mukesh and Geeta were kind of famous for singing sad songs in those days (thanks to the famous songs like “Dil jalta hain” from Pehli Nazar (1945) and “Mera sundar sapna beet gaya” from Do Bhai (1947) respectively). It is a pleasant surprise to see both of them singing lively and light duets for composer Naashad. Geeta also sang a memorable solo “Nazar se mili hain nazar pehle pehle” for this film.

There is very little information available about the work of Geeta Dutt with the composer Naashad between 1949 and 1960. It is not certain whether she sang any songs for him in this period or not. In case she has not, then it is quite surprising since she sang as many as ten songs for him in the year 1948. We request all to provide us with this information.

Moving to the year 1961, we have two foot tapping duets of Geeta Dutt with legendary Mohd. Rafi composed by Naashad for the film Pyar ki Dastan. This was directed by lyricist P. L. Santoshi (father of the famous director Rajkumar Santoshi) and starred the actress Shubha Khote in the lead. “Kahan chali re chali re chali tu ra ra ra” is a fast paced lively duet and a must listen. The other song “Chakai ke chakadam ayaa deewana” is also an equally enjoyable song.
