(1930 - 1972)

In her career spanning from 1946 to 1972, the legendary playback singer Geeta Dutt sang approximately 1500 songs (inclusive of non-film songs and songs in all languages). An attempt is being made here to showcase her professional career. The years 1947 to 1959 were probably the most prolific years in her career, since her life was in turmoil of personal problems from the year 1959 onwards till her untimely death in 1972.

Hindi Film songs

Geeta Dutt sang approximately 1200 Hindi Film songs for many composers of the forties, fifties and the sixties. She sang a wide range of songs from romantic to sad songs, lullabies to club songs, classical based compositions to comic songs, ghazals to sensuous songs, bhajans to teaser songs. Geeta was known to capture the mood of the song and singing from the bottom of her heart. Her classical training was not at par with other female singers of her era, but her spontaneity added that special "Geeta Dutt touch" to her songs.

Her most famous and celebrated work in Hindi Film songs is of course with the veteran composers Sachin Dev Burman, O. P. Nayyar and Hemant Kumar. She also sang for other equally famous and talented composers like Chitragupt, Bulo C Rani, Hansraj Behl, Husnlal-Bhagatram, Madan Mohan, Anil Biswas, Roshan, Avinash Vyas, S. N. Tripathi and Vasant Desai to name a few. Her musical association with the major composers she worked with for Hindi film songs is discussed in details here.. Please note that the listings of the songs are not complete in some cases.

Based on the available information, she must have sung for more than 100 composers. A detailed list of composers she worked for (other than the composers discussed in details) is available here.. Please note that this is not an exhaustive list and we will appreciate if you can provide us with more names of composers Geeta Dutt worked for along with the film names.
