Mr India (1961) was another small budget film starring the charming Geeta Bali ji. As we have mentioned earlier (and has been discussed a lot on the net), in spite of great talent, Geeta Bali ji rarely got opportunities to work with big banners and popular stars. In this film, her hero was I S Johar.
The film’s music was composed by G S Kohli sahab, who was a long time assistant to O P Nayyar sahab. Geeta ji sang two songs for this film. To the best of our knowledge/resources, these are the only songs she ever sang for G S Kohli sahab. The lyrics were penned by Jaan Nisar Akhtar sahab.
1) Dekha naa jaaye :
This song is filmed on the dancing diva Helen.
2) Main maachis ki teeli:
This beautiful song was deleted from both VCD and DVD. We believe that it was filmed on Helen as well.
In spite of great talent and charming personality, the wonderful actress Geeta Bali ji ended up acting in a lot of low budget films, many of which have been forgotten with the passage of time. Some references on the internet suggest that her difficult financial conditions and need to support the family was main reason behind this.
Laalten (1956) was one of such films where she was paired opposite the great actor Motilal sahab. It’s music was composed by Hemantda and once again we have Geeta ji singing as many as six films for this film. She sang two solos and four duets. Out of the four duets, one was with S Balbir sahab , the rest three were of course sung by Hemantda himself.
Hemantda himself sang one solo for this film which has become famous among music lovers for it has a reference to keeping the photo of Geeta Bali in the pocket.
Here are those six melodious and enjoyable songs of Geeta ji from this film. Actual videos of none of the songs are available but we consider ourselves lucky to be able to listen to these rare and lovely songs.
1) Agar pyaar mein muskuraaye na hote –
This is the best song from the album where Geeta ji pours her heart in this melancholy. The lyrics of the highest order by Kaif Irfani sahab, fine music and singing with all the feelings – all these make it a memorable presentation
2) Kabhi akad kar baat na karna humse are mawaali, ek nazar mein humne tumko dil ki Dilli de daali –
The same Kaif Irfani sahab now pens a light hearted romantic-comic song. The composer-singer and Geeta ji make this such a lovely fun-filled enjoyable song.
3) Lo aaya Johny laalten-
This seems to be the title song about some vendor of lanterns penned by Indivar ji.
4) Oh Lilli Lilli Lilli –
A fun-filled duet with S Balbir sahab. Again Kaif Irfani sahab shows his versatility. Geeta ji was so well-versed with these comic styled songs.
5) Maine tujhe pukaara, tu bhi mujhe pukaar
Again a highlight song of the film, penned by Shewan Rizwi sahab. An emotionally charged song sung so well by Hemantda in his deep voice and Geeta ji who has always excelled in soulful songs.
6) Dil ka tattoo ad jaata hain
Another romantic-comic song penned by Indivar ji and sung by Hemantda and Geeta ji. Among all the songs of this film, this is rarest song which was recently found on youtube.
Baaz (1953) was directed by Guru Dutt, and produced jointly by Geeta Bali and Guru Dutt. It was made under the banner of H.G. Films. H for Harkirtan Kaur (Geeta Bali’s real name) and G is of course Guru Dutt.
Geeta Bali plays the title role of Nisha, alias the rebellious Baaz, a young leader who triggers a revolutionary movement against the ruthless Portuguese rule. Guru Dutt made his acting debut as a hero as the Prince Ravi with this film. He was earlier seen in a small role in the film Jaal (1952) in the song “Zor lagaake haiyya”. Baaz is set some time in the 16th century in a fictitious princely state of Malabar.
The music of Baaz was quite popular in the fifties and sixties but the film bombed at the box office. Since the film was set in the backdrop of Portuguese rule and freedom movement, there was ample scope of patriotism in the film. A dance based song “Jaago jaago savera huaa raat gayi” has a very nicely set inspiring flair. The song that sets the movie at its high and makes a dramatic change in the plot of the film is “Aye watan ke naujawan, jaag aur jagaa ke chal” sung by Geeta Dutt and ably supported by the chorus.
The song is set at night on the ship where Nisha (Geeta Bali) and many villagers from Malabar are in the captivity of the Portuguese. They are planning to sell the Indians to work as laborers. Nisha starts humming and the chorus joins her. She is igniting the fire of freedom and self respect within the souls of the people. They revolt against the Portuguese and win over them. Finally by the end of the song, the Indians take over the ship and Nisha is made the commander-in-chief.

हमारे चुने हुए गीता दत्त के गाए गानें इन दिनों आप सुन रहे हैं ‘ओल्ड इज़ गोल्ड’ की ख़ास लघु शृंखला ‘गीतांजली’ के अन्तर्गत। आज के अंक में गीता दत्त गा रहीं हैं गीता बाली के लिए। जी हाँ, वही गीता बाली जिनकी थिरकती हुई आँखें, जिनके चेहरे के अनगिनत भाव, जिनकी नैचरल अदाकारी के चर्चे आज भी लोग करते हैं। और इन सब से परे यह कि वो एक बहुत अच्छी इंसान थीं। गीता बाली का जन्म अविभाजित पंजाब में एक सिख परिवार में हुआ था। उनका असली नाम था हरकीर्तन कौर। देश के बँटवारे के बाद परिवार बम्बई चली आई और गरीबी ने उन्हे घेर लिया। तभी हरकीर्तन कौर बन गईं गीता बाली और अपने परिवार को आर्थिक संकट से उबारा एक के बाद एक फ़िल्म में अभिनय कर। बम्बई आने से पहले उन्होने पंजाब की कुछ फ़िल्मों में नृत्यांगना के छोटे मोटे रोल किए हुए थे। कहा जाता है कि जब किदार शर्मा, जिन्होने गीता बाली को पहला ब्रेक दिया, पहली बार जब वो उनसे मिले तो वो अपने परिवार के साथ किसी के बाथरूम में रहा करती थीं। किदार शर्मा ने पहली बार गीता बाली को मौका दिया १९४८ की फ़िल्म ‘सुहाग रात’ में। और इसी फ़िल्म से शुरु हुआ गीता बाली और गीता रॉय का साथ। गीता बाली और गीता दत्त, दोनों ने ही यह साबित किया कि दर्दीले और चुलबुले, दोनों तरह के किरदार और गीत गानें में वो अपनी अपनी जगह पारंगत हैं। १९५१ में गुरु दत्त की पहली हिट फ़िल्म ‘बाज़ी’ से गीता बाली एक नामचीन अदाकारा बन गईं। देव आनंद ने इस फ़िल्म के बारे में कहा था कि “People came repeatedly to theatres to see Geeta’s spirited dancing to “tadbeer se bigdi hui taqdeer bana de”. This cemented the bonding between Geeta Bali and Geeta Roy!” शम्मी कपूर गीता बाली की ज़िंदगी में आए जब वे दोनों ‘मिस कोका कोला’ और ‘कॊफ़ी हाउस’ जैसी फ़िल्मों में साथ साथ काम कर रहे थे। दोनों ने आगे चलकर शादी कर ली, लेकिन बहुत जल्द गीता बाली इस दुनिया से गुज़र गईं। उस वक़्त शम्मी कपूर ‘तीसरी मंज़िल’ फ़िल्म में काम कर रहे थे।
गीता बाली की थोड़ी चर्चा हमने की, और अब बारी है आज के गाने की। गीता दत्त की आवाज़ में पेश है गीता बाली पर फ़िल्माया फ़िल्म ‘मुजरिम’ का गीत “चंदा चांदनी में जब चमके”। वैसे आपको बता दें कि इस फ़िल्म में शम्मी कपूर की नायिका थीं रागिनी; गीता बाली तो बस होटल डान्सर की भूमिका में केवल इसी आइटम सॊंग् में नज़र आईं। इस गीत में गीता बाली को बर्मीज़ लुक्स दिए गए, जिस तरह से हेलेन दिखती थीं। बहुत ही खुशमिजाज़ गीत है और एक बार फिर से ओ. पी. नय्यर साहब की धुन, लेकिन इस बार गीतकार हैं मजरूह सुल्तानपुरी। इस गीत का शुरुआती संगीत काफ़ी हद तक हमें याद दिलाती है “मेरा नाम चिन चिन चू” के शुरुआती संगीत का। तो दोस्तों, आइए गीत को सुना जाए, पिछले दो गीतों की तरह आज भी बारी है झूमने की। गीता दत्त की आवाज़ में इस तरह के गानें इतने अच्छे लगते हैं कि सच में दिल झूम उठता है। ५० के दशक में नय्यर साहब ने बहुत से इस तरह के गानें गीता दत्त से गवाए हैं, जिनमें से बहुत से गानें आज कहीं से बिल्कुल सुनाई नहीं देते हैं। और आज का गीत उन्ही में से एक है। लेकिन पराग जी के प्रयास का नतीजा है कि आज हम इस गीत को एक बार फिर से जी रहे हैं। आइए सुनते हैं।
