Rare gems tribute – Vol. 3

November 22nd, 2015

Geeta Dutt

We keep searching for rare and lesser heard gems of Geeta ji and on the eve of her 85th Birth anniversary we are pleased to share some rare gems. We will be posting five songs per each post. All of these have been collected from various sources over several years of painstaking efforts. We are grateful to our dear friend Aditya Pant for sharing these extremely rare songs with us. This is the third part in this series.

1) Geeta Dutt – Dim dikamk damroo – Shiv Shakti (1952), MD – Avinash Vyas, Lyrics – Munshi Sagar Hussain.
Here is another lovely rare religious song in relatively good audio quality.

2) Geeta Dutt – Ek gagan panth ka – Nanad Bhojai (1948), MD – Bulo C Rani, Lyrics – Pandit Indra.

Nanad Bhojai was also first made in Gujrati and then re-made/dubbed in Hindi. Once again all the tunes of the original Gujrati film were used in Hindi but again Avinash Vyas ji was not given the credit. The Hindi songs were credited to Bulo C Rani sahab.
This song is remade from the original Gujrati song Ek gagan panth nu pankheru.

3) Geeta Dutt – Gaaoon mai dil ka tarana – Nanad Bhojai (1948) – MD – Bulo C Rani, Lyrics – Pandit Indra.

One more song from Nanad Bhojai (original Gujrati song – te je kahyu.n te kyaa.n gayu.n) originally penned and composed by Avinash Vyas ji. The Hindi version is again credited to Bulo C Rani sahab

4) Geeta Dutt – Hum bhi jiye tum bhi – Meri Bhabhi (1948) , MD- R A Paaingankar, Lyrics : Gulshan Jalalabadi.
Very playful and rare song from the film Meri Bhabhi (1948) with chorus.

5) Geeta Dutt : Jab se uljhe nainwa – Pareeksha (1963) , MD – Pandit S N Tripathi, Lyrics: S R Saaz.

Pareksha (1963) was the last film for which Geeta ji sang for Pandit S N Tripathi ji. This is a very rare song.

This is the second part in this series.

1) Geeta Dutt , Mohd Rafi, Manna Dey , Nirmala Devi – Jinhe rukh se parda – Haqdaar (1964), MD – Bulo C Rani, Lyrics – Prem Varbartani.

This is a Qawwali styled song sung by Geeta Dutt , Mohd Rafi, Manna Dey , Nirmala Devi and chorus. This is possibly last song Geeta ji sang for Bulo C Rani sahab. Also this could be the only song when she sang with Nirmala Devi ji (mother of actor Govinda).

2) Geeta Dutt, Manna Dey – Bholanaath re naiya – Shri Ganesh Janma (1951) , MD – Khemchand Prakash, Manna Dey, Lyrics – Pandit Bharat Vyas.

This is a lovely devotional song based on the traditional tune. MD Khemchand Prakash ji passed away during making of the film, hence Manna Dey ji completed the music.

3) Geeta Dutt – Chupke chupke teer chale – Hamari Duniya (1952), MD – Shyam Babu Pathak, Lyrics : Indivar.
This is a very rare song and unfortunately we are still not able to get it in very good audio quality.

4) Geeta Dutt, G M Durrani, Meena Kapoor – Daiya re daiya – Ghayal (1951) , MD – Gyan Dutt, Lyrics: Sarswati Kumar Deepak .

The film Ghayal (1951) had this rare trio song by Geeta ji, her friend Meena Kapoor ji and G M Durrani sahab.

5) Geeta Dutt – Dekho ji dil na todo – Captain Kishore (1957), MD – Chitragupt, Lyrics – Raja Mehdi Ali Khan.
We have been looking for better audio quality of this very melodious comic romantic song. This has some hissing noise but is still better than the audios we had in the past.

Rare gems tribute – Vol. 1

1) Geeta Dutt and Agha – Aag se na khelo – Guru Ghantal (1956) , MD – Lachhi Ram, Lyrics – Sarshar Sailani.
Enjoy this rare comic number where the actor Agha also sings with Geeta ji.

2) Geeta Dutt – Dard kyun uthataa hain dil mein – Birha Ki Raat (1950), MD – Husnlal Bhagatram, Lyrics – Sarshar Sailani.
This is a rare sad song from the film Birha Ki Raat (1950) starring Dev Anand and Nargis.

3) Geeta Dutt – Aaayi bahaar bhar lo – Kitna Badal Gaya Insaan (1957), MD – Hemant Kumar, Lyrics – S H Bihari.
We had been looking for this dance number from the Ajit and Nalini Jaywant starrer film Kitna Badal Gaya Insaan. It is a lovely dance number with chorus.

4) Geeta Dutt and chorus – Ab toh darshan do – Mere Bhagwan (1947), MD – Sajjad Hussain, Lyrics : Shevan Rizvi.
This song is mainly sung by the chorus singers and Geeta ji sings just one line in this song. Listen to her sweet and young voice at 2:09 minutes in this song. The film stars Madhubala and singing star Surendra.

5) Geeta Dutt – Bhabhi o bhabhi – Gunsundari (1948), MD – Avinash Vyas, Lyrics – Pandit Indra.

Gunsundari (1948) was a social drama based on the famous maha-granth Saraswatichandra. It was a musical super-hit. Avinash Vyas ji composed music and wrote lyrics for this original Gujrati film. Young Geeta Roy sang “have thoDaa thoDaa thaav varaNaagii, o bhaabhii tame” (oh sister-in-law please become a little fashionable) became huge hit. The film was also made (probably dubbed) in Hindi but here Avinash Vyas had to share the credits with Bulo C Rani. Almost every Hindi song was made using the tune of the original Gujrati song. Geeta sang this song Bhabhi O Bhabhi Badlo Thoda Thoda Rang – (copy of Have thoda thoda thaav) was only credited to Avinash Vyas.

Jaimala program : Now in Better Audio

September 27th, 2015

Jaimala

*** Exclusive: Geeta Dutt presenting Jaimala program in her own voice ***

Jaimala is a program that has been aired on the Vividh Bharti station of All India Radio since it’s early days. It is a one hour program that exclusively plays requests from soldiers posted at the front. Once a week they have a special where a celebrity associated with the film world plays his/her own selection. Over the years a number of prominent personalities have hosted this program and these programs are a fascinating archive of their thoughts, ideas and musical selection.

Playback singer Geeta Dutt (nee Roy) presented this program in the year 1969, just three years before her untimely death on 20th July 1972.

Earlier we presented the text of this program and the songs played in this post. Now we are presenting the complete audio of this program where one can listen to the speaking voice of Geeta Dutt. Please bear with the little disturbance in the audio recording.

Mere pyare fauji bhaiyon, aaj aapse baaten karte huye mujhe bahut prasannata ho rahi hai. Pehla geet phool maine mahaan kalakar K L Saigal ke awaaz mein chuna hai.

Song 1: Karoon kya aas niraas bhayi (Dushman)

Arzoo sahab ka likha yeh geet tha film Dushman ka, jiske sangeetkaar the Pankaj Mullick. Main jab gaana shuru kiya, us samay ke naami gayakon mein se the Shamshad Begum, Kanan Devi, Amirbai Karnataki, Zohrabai Amabalewali, Krishna Chandra Dey, Pankaj Mullick aur K L Saigal. Saigal sahab Uttar Bhartiya hote huye bhi Bangla bahut achchhi tarah bol sakte the aur isliye Bangal mein we kaafi lokpriya the. Ab main apne zamaane ki sabse jyaada lokpriy gayika Lata Mangeshkar ka gaaya ek geet sunwane jaa rahi hoon, film ka naam hai Durgesh Nandini.

Song 2: Kahaan le chale ho bata do musafir (Durgesh Nandini)

Rajinder Krishna ka likha yeh geet tha, sangeetkaar the Hemant Kumar. Hemant dada sangeetkaar banne se bahot pehle ek gaayak the. Film Jaal mein unka gaaya huya yeh geet mujhe aksar yaad aa jaati hai.

Song 3: Yeh raat yeh chaandni phir kahaan (Jaal)

Abhi jo geet aapne suna use likha tha Sahir Ludhianvi ne aur suron se sajaya Sachin Dev Burman ne. Burman dada ka sangeetkaaron mein ek vishesh sthaan hai. Unhi ke direction mein aaj se lagbagh 21 saal pehle film Do Bhai ke liye geet gaaye the. Mera sundar sapna beet gaya, Humein chhod piya kis des gaye aur yaad karoge yaad karoge, inhee geeton se log muhe jaanne lage the. Burman daada ki bahut si dhunon par gaane ka awsar mujhe mila hain. Unhi mein se ek hai film Sujata ka yeh geet jise Majrooh Sultanpuri ne likha thaa.

Song 4: Nanhi kali sone chali hawa dheere aana (Sujata)

Ab main prastut karti hoon film Dekh Kabira Roya ka Manna Dey ka gaaya ek geet. Kisiko dekhte hi sapnon ka ek sansaar jaag uthaa. Man use pehchaanta hain, lekin aankhen us se anjaan hain. Aur hothon par aa jaata hain kaun aaya mere man ke dwaare paayal ki jhankaar liye. Rajender Krishen ki rachana ko Madan Mohan ne sangeet baddh kiya hain.

Song 5: Kaun aaya mere man ke dwaare (Dekh Kabira Roya)

Ab main apna hi gaaya film Shart ka ek geet sunwati hoon . Film Shart ke liye S H Bihari ne likha hai aur Hemant dada ne swarbaddha kiya hai. Is prem geet mein anantkaal tak apne priyatam ka saath dene ka vaada hai.

Song 6: Na yeh chaand hoga na taare rahenge (Shart)

Ab mere saamne hai film Pyaasa ka record. Aur isi ke saath yaad aa rahi hai mere jeevan ki sukh bhari dukh bhari yaaden, lekin aapko yeh sab batakar kya karoongi. Mere mann ki is samay ki haalat ka andaaza aap achchhi tarah lagaa sakte hain agar aap jaante hain ki Is film ke naayak nirmata nirdeshak the mere patidev Guru Dutt hain.

Song 7: Aaj sajan mohe ang lagaa lo janam safal ho jaaye (Pyaasa)

Mere patidev sahi arth mein kalakaar the. Woh jo kuchh bhi karte bahut mehnat aur lagan se karte. Filmon ke zariye apne vichaaron ko vyakt karte.

Song 8: Jinhe naaz hain Hind par (Pyaasa)

Yeh geet bhi film Pyaasa ka tha. Yeh dono geet Sahir ne likhe aur Burman dada ne unki dhun banaayi. Agle geet mein Aasha aur umang ki jhalak hain. Baadlon ke chhaon mein chhota sa ghar banane ke sapne. Aur lagta hain chaand sitaare sab apne hain, sirf apne. Geetkar Shailendra sangeetkar Salil Chaudhary aur Gaayak Kishore Kumar film Naukri mein

Song 9: Chhota sa ghar hogaa (Naukri)

Is kaarykram ka antim geet bhi main apne patidev ki film Saheb Biwi Aur Ghulam se chuna hain. Geetkaar Shakeel aur sangeetkaar Hemant Kumar. Ab kabhi kabhi mujhe lagta hain ki yeh geet ke bhaav paatron se bhi zyaada mere apne bhaavon ka bayaan hain.

Song 10: Na jaao saiyaan chhudake baiyaan (Saheb Biwi Aur Ghulaam)

Pyaar fauji bhaayiyon, is kaaryakram ka samay ab samapt ho rahaa hain. Main bhi aap se ijaazat chaahti hoon. Aasha hain isi tarah kabhi phir mulaakat hogi. Jai Hind.

Here is a video clip of Sonal singing a song.

Dr. Sonal Wadhwa did her doctorate in Music from Delhi University in 2014. She has been fortunate enough to be musically cultured under the able guidance of Padmabhushan Vidushi Shanno Khurana ji. Dr. Wadhwa soon recognised light music as her forte and have been working as an independent music professional (singer) since then. Seeing herself in deep resonance with Geeta Dutt Ji’s voice & tunes, this idea of holding an evening in remembrance of her thus took shape. She would be paying tribute to Geeta Dutt ji by singing her signature solo-songs.

Please attend the program and enjoy the melodies.

Many thanks to Sonal ji for taking the initiative for this program.

One of the most awaited videos: Chaand hain wohi – Parineeta (1953)

August 12th, 2015

Parineeta
The film Parineeta (1952) has a magical song “Chaand hain wohi” sung by Geeta ji. It was filmed on Meena Kumari ji but the song was deleted from the film and was never made available on any VCD/DVD of the film all these years. Our dear friend Kusum Saxena ji got hold of a VHS tape of this film and it had the video of this song. We had earlier hosted the video on our website here Great Discoveries Great Songs
Parineeta

Now the video has been made available on Youtube for every one to appreciate and enjoy.

One can listen to a better audio file on this link, which has been available all these years

The lyrics of this divine melody are penned by Pandit Bharat Vyas ji and is composed by Arunkumar Mukherjee sahab.

chand hai vahi sitare hai vahi gagan
phir bhi kyu udas hai udas mera man
udas mera man chand hai vahi

kaun tha mila mujhe jo mil ke kho gaya
kaun tha mila mujhe jo mil ke kho gaya
kaun mere paas aa ke dur ho gaya
phul hai vahi phul hai vahi, bahare hai vahi chaman
phir bhi kyo udas hai udas mera man
udas mera man chand hai vahi

aaj mere man ki bansuri bhi maun hai
aaj mere man ki bansuri bhi maun hai
jis ko dhundhte mere nayan vah kaun hai
rag hai vahi rag hai vahi, parag hai vahi pavan
phir bhi kyo udas hai udas mera man
udas mera man chand hai vahi

Parineeta
We are extremely grateful to Kusum ji for sharing the video on youtube.

Heartfelt tribute from a young fan

July 21st, 2015

Geeta Dutt

Sautrik Bhattacharya:

On the eve of her death anniversary it is very natural to feel sad on our parts being very faithful fans of our beloved singer Geeta Dutt. I feel myself extremely lucky to be able to apprehend the sweetness of her voice, the serenity of her vox and heartfelt emotions of her singing when my age mates and friends take pride in defaming old melodies and praising the likes of Honey singh. From a very childhood the beauty of old songs have attracted me beyond attraction, but Geeta ji’s songs have always been special. I don’t know actually how she silently captured the apex position in the kingdom of melody of my mind, but I have always felt a deep sense of connection from the very first time I remember listening her.

Her voice was such a fine actress, that I just can’t stop admiring the genius, playing roles from a little boy to a mother, sister, leader, lover, teacher, fighter, devotee, wife, friend and many more including a fruit seller. She could have played many more roles but may be we were not lucky to behold those acts. Though people give reasons for her early demise I think she had come on earth borrowing the voice of God thus departed early. But still among her short stay among us she gifted us ample songs to make peace with our souls. I do want to live long and one reason for that is simply to listen her. May God grant me a small luck that whenever I leave this melodious earth I may leave with peace and satisfaction in heart and Geeta ji’s songs in ears.

Tributes from music lovers

July 21st, 2015

Geeta Dutt

Today on 20th July, some music lovers on social networking site Facebook offered their tributes to Geeta Dutt ji. The tributes were from songs different languages, film and non-film songs. Some were songs from the 40s and some were from early 70s. The moods of the songs ranged from sad, club, romantic, devotional, lullaby and so on. Many were rare songs and some others were very popular ones. All this clearly indicates the wide range and versatility of Geeta ji’s singing. We are sharing some of such tributes here.

Lakshmi Priya:

Do we need to know the language to enjoy such songs. This is the 1st bengali song my father made me hear. Decades later I found it again on you tube . Those days doordarshan used to now and then air such songs
My father was derilious with joy hearing this.Eai Nishi Raat…… Bengali film song By Geeta Dutta from the movie Prithibi Amarey Chai

Sudarshan Pandey:

Dedicating this song to Geeta ji. It is like Gangaajal se Ganga Pooja. If you listen to this song either in afternoon or in night it is more powerful and heart piercing voice of Geeta Dutt ji which will take you to another world of pain. She was the lady who felt the brunt of Guru Dutt’s unfolded moods. None of us can find a better answer for Guru Dutt’s state of mind to be in such mysterious mood. But it is really easy to understand her mental position to live with a genius and mysterious Guru Dutt. I always feel that there is very real Geeta ji in this song, instilling her passion, her agony, her confusion or state of mind into this song.

Parag Sankla:

First post on this theme dedicated to my most beloved voice, Geeta ji. The very touching melodious song expresses my feelings. Jab tum nahin toh chaand sitaare main kya karun, yeh phool yeh chaman yeh nazaare main kyaa karu , Film – Kitna Badal Gaya Insaan 1957, MD – Hemant Kumar, Lyricist – S.H.Bihari, Singer – Geeta Dutt

Parag Sankla:

Third post. True magic in less than 3 minutes long audio. The maestro composer Pandit S N Tripathi ji, lyricist Ramesh Chandra Pandey, actress Meena Kumari and singer Geeta Roy creates this near perfect melody for the film Laxmi Narayan (1951). Gayi birhaa ki raat aaya hain naya prabhaat

Deepa Buty:

I wonder why this song & how a song like this can be deleted from the movie. Each time you listen to it & you feel the power in her voice as well as the intoxication she spreads through singing.

Meeta Mukherjee:

My third post is a mujra sung by Geeta Dutt from the movie Savera (1958) penned by Prem Dhawan which was composed by my father in law Shree Sailesh Mukherjee…She used to come to my in law’s residence for rehearsals.

Rajendra Bora:

This song of Geeta Ji is full of pathos. The words, the music and top of all her voice goes straight to deep in your heart. It is from unreleased film ‘Bhool Na Jaana’. The song was written by Ghanshyam Aacharya and melodiously composed by late Daan Singh, both belonging to Jaipur (Rajasthan).

Kailash Mundra:

CID : I dedicate this song to Geeta Duttji & Bombay (Mumbai) . I have been visiting Mumbai since the 50’s and feel nostalgic whenever I see such songs depicting Bombay ! The old clear roads, the royal feeling of riding in Victoria (buggie).
This is a fantastic song which was on top of Binaca Geetmala in 1956 and love the rhythm of this memorable song . Majroohsaab’s words are applicable in Mumbai even today ” beghar ko awaara yahan kehte has has, khud katey galey sabke kahe isko business”. Thing to note is Geeta ji makes an appearance only at the end of the song but leaves her impact

Nikhil E Iyer:

Geeta ji sang so many wonderful duets with Hemant Kumar from which their best song cannot be easily categorized..This is one such song from Bhagwat Mahima(1955) composed by Hemant Da and penned by Pt Madhur…’Har Dukh Ka Savera Hai, Par Shaam Nahi Hai,
Bhagwan Teri Duniya Mein Aaram Nahi Hai’..

Gajendra Khanna:

Another adored non-film by Geeta ji which I can never get over is “Hum Ban Rahe The Jinke Woh Ban Gaye Hamaare”. I discovered this few years back and have been enamoured ever since.
Its composed by Kanu Ghosh and the lyrics are by Madhukar Rajasthani. Just give a listen to this song. Can anyone sound sweeter!

Gajendra Khanna:

Geeta Roy was a singer par excellence and its not surprising that Sajjad Hussain used her singing in quite a few of his films. Enjoy this delightful song, one of my favourites, from movie Sangdil picturised on the lovely Madhubala (who are a great combination!). Enjoy Darshan Pyaasi Aayi Daasi Jagmag Deep Jalaaye to appreciate the pathos that Geeta Roy could deliver, seemingly effortlessly (but try singing it!)

Gajendra Khanna:

I am quite fond of her songs as some of you know. This non-film Hindi song is one of my favourites. It was composed by V Balsara and is called Gaayein Gaayein Naye Tarane Gaayein. Its a quite delightful song.

Nikhil E Iyer:

My first song for the Theme is this soothing melody rendered by Geeta Dutt from Husn Ka Chor(1953)..There was a time when I heard these songs continuously for hours and hours. Even now when i listen this song, I get tears. Though this is a wonderful composition by Bulo C Rani and penned by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, but for me this song is only Geeta Dutt song..Its been made for her.. God gifted her a beautiful voice, but it was she who made that divine gift eternal.

Aditya Pant:
Sharing a recent discovery of an extremely rare song on Geeta Dutt’s death anniversary… based on a popular folk tune.
Naach Rahi Naach Rahi Champakali – Awara Shahzadi (1956) – Geeta Dutt & Chorus – Jimmy – Khawar Zaman

Suman Vinod:

Two Voices that will Always Vibrate in our hearts—Two Lovely Singers—Two Careers Cut Short due to different reasons—yet what we Got will last us Many Lifetimes—

Archisman Mozumder:

A song of Geeta Dutt, on her death anniversary, with the lady who operated in a somewhat similar domain of song-genre – Asha Bhonsle.

This sprightly song is a visual treat as well. Vijay Anand’s deft camera-work, Shashikala’s fetching expressions & most importantly, Helen’s ebullient yet graceful movements.

The crisp musical orchestration & arrangement (most probably) is Anthony Gonsalves’… An indication of how vital they are, to enhance the beauty of a song. Lovely and crooning accordion for the languid and sensual part of Geeta ji and the bubbly brass /trumpets for busy part of Asha ji.

Lalita Chidambaram:

Remembering Geeta Dutt on her death anniversary. This particular song happened to be sung by me for the next two generations.Still it is as fresh as it was when I heard it for the first time!

Amitabh Nigam:

Remembering Geeta Dutt today on her death anniversary. Sad songs conveyed the pain more effectively in her voice. This Shailendra song composed by Mukul Roy is a case in point. The yearning in her voice made songs pathos-laden and has been unmatched.

Darkndusky Hoon (Bharathi):

batao kya karungi mai jab gham ki raat aayegi
jo ghum ki raat aayegi mai chaand banke aaunga
tamam rat khwab me tumhare jagmagaunga

dikha sakoge khwab kya jo nind hi na aayegi
na aaye nind ghum nahi mai neend ban ke aaunga
aur aake in gulabi ankhdiyon ko choom jaunga

and so it goes ….Sweet lyrics by Kaifi Azmi and SDB’s dhun . Geeta and Rafi saab’s voices just tug at your heart strings…Have been wantign to post this song for an eon now ….Long Live GD ….

Archana Gupta:

Lovely, rarer song and reminds me very strongly of “Tum to dil ke taar chhed kar” – not just music, not just lyrics, not just the “style” but the complete package. Mukhda also took me to this one for some unexplicable reason though there is no real similarity beyond GD smile emoticon (and maybe I was simply in the mood to post this one today and am too lazy to write a real post – yes I should and pay a fitting tribute to the lady but for now will add this one here smile emoticon ) Love this song and the effect of longing and anticipation that Geeta Dutt produces with her inflection as she sings

Venkata Raman G:

The Banner depicting a Naiyya in the Sea inspires me to Post this song as a tribute to the one and only GEETA DUTT nee Geetā Ghosh Roy Chowdhuri (23 November 1930 – 20 July 1972) Prolific & Prominent Indian Playback singer, on her Death Anniversary today

Maaji Albele (Pyaar Ka Kanta Man Ki Machariya)
Geeta Dutt
O P Nayyar
Majrooh Sultanpuri
Baaz (1953)

Vijay Kumar:

Remembering Geeta Dutt. Hoon abhi main jawan ai dil..

Geeta’s voice chases as no other voice, leaving one soaked in the song sentiment for a while longer. A few instances : the pining in a climbing resonance of koi door se awaj de chale aao….., the ‘sobbing’ rendition in mera sunder sapna toot gaya…. or the resignation inherent in waqt ne kiya kya haseen sitam……My post though is live-the-moment number – hoon abhi main jawan ai dil. But please give another look to the lyrics. It seems to be summing up the pain, the poignance or even the ecstasy in Geeta’s life. Perhaps, Geeta-Guru was a classic case of complementing tragedies !

Hoon Abhi Main Jawaan Ae Dil, Hoon Abhi Main Jawaan

Dibyendu Dey:

My Tribute to the immortal Singer on her death anniversary…A less-heard song from the bengali movie Sathihara
lyrics- Gouriprasanna Mazumdar, Music- Hemant kumar.

Arvinder Sharma:

Of Jogan songs, there’s not much to say for me, as countless pages must have been devoted by Geeta Dutt fans, who are prolific writers, and understand the music better than me.
But if initially I was swept over by the great Bhajans of this film, it was later on that other Geeta Dutt songs, the playful ones, caught my attention. And I find them no less beautiful.
Odhni pe bijliyon Ki kook, a stanza, I used to rewind my cassette player just enough to listen to it again, still can’t get over. What a rendering. RIP GEETA DUTT !

Geeta Roy turns Dutt

July 20th, 2015

Publicity poster

We have already talked a lot about the huge popularity of Geeta Roy in various posts on our website. Post marriage when She adopted the name Geeta Dutt, people had to be told both names were the same person. This label scan from the collection of our dear friend Gajendra Khanna proudly labels her as Geeta Dutt (Roy) informing the filmgoers about this fact on the record of Toofan Aur Diya.
Meri aan bhagwan

Her name along with Lata ji on this record label for the duet song also appears in the same format.

Meri chhoti si behen

Till 1950 during their female duets, it was Geeta Roy whose name came first before Lata Mangeshkar. It indicates the popularity she enjoyed. Things did change the reverse way in the later years but the fact remains that while she was Geeta Roy she ruled the Hindi film singing world.

This clearly proves what a rage ‘Geeta Roy’ had been! Even all her Bengali records between 1953 and 1956 mentioned ‘Geeta Dutt (Roy)’ says our friend Sounak Gupta. The ‘Harano Sur’ record with ‘Tumi Je Amar’, was the last to mention her name in this way. Even most of the mid 50s (Bengali) film magazines used to mention ‘Smt. Geeta Dutt (Roy)’. That was because of the stature Geeta Roy had attained.

Here are labels of some of her 78 rpm records of Bengali songs graciously shared with us by our dear friend Sounak Gupta.

The first record with her credited is GE 24702 – Padma amar kohe kende kende (Lyrics & Music – Kanu Ghosh) & Aay Re Chhute Aay (Lyrics & Music – Kanu Ghosh).

Great fan of Geeta ji and our dear friend Mahesh Sagar recalls that many 78 rpm records continued to have her name as Geeta Roy till the year 1956-1957 . Even the famous Bhai Bhai song ‘ae dil mujhe bata de’ is also credited to Geeta Roy on 78 rpm records. Mahesh distinctly remembers an interview of legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle ji where she mentioned about R D Burman discouraging her from changing her surname to Burman ( Asha Burman) giving example of how Geetaji’s Career took a hit after she changed her surname from Roy to Dutt.
